The third of 10 quick updates on offseason Pac-10 goings on.
- With 17 starters back from a 9-4 team, including the West Coast's top Heisman Trophy candidate in running back Jahvid Best, the Bears look like this season's best bet to unseat USC as Pac-10 champions.
The big issue
- To win the conference, Cal needs to improve a passing game that averaged only 190 yards per game and ranked sixth in efficiency in 2008. That means quarterback Kevin Riley -- or Brock Mansion -- needs to play with consistency and a talented but unproven corps of receivers need to grow up.
Quick hit news
- Receiver Markish Jones, a former Clemson signee and touted JC transfer, will not be on the roster this fall.
- Cal is promoting its Sept. 5 season opener vs. Maryland as a "Blue Out". All Bears fans are asked to wear blue.
- In a cost-cutting move, Cal will ride a bus instead of take a charter flight to L.A. for the UCLA game.
